The Village People, the iconic disco group, are still performing with some original members, although they’ve undergone several lineup changes over the years.
Formed in 1977, The Village People became a cultural phenomenon with their catchy tunes and flamboyant costumes representing American masculine cultural stereotypes. The original lineup consisted of Victor Willis (police officer/navy man), Felipe Rose (Native American), Randy Jones (cowboy), David Hodo (construction worker), Glenn Hughes (leatherman/biker), and Alex Briley (soldier). They are best known for hits like “Y.M.C.A.,” “Macho Man,” and “In the Navy.”
Over the years, the group has seen members come and go. Victor Willis left the group in 1980 but returned in 2017 to lead a new version of the band. The other original members have pursued various projects, and some have passed away, such as Glenn Hughes who died in 2001.
Despite the changes, The Village People have continued to tour and perform. They’ve also been recognized for their impact on music and LGBTQ culture, including receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2008. The group’s music remains popular, often featured in movies, TV shows, and at sporting events, ensuring their legacy endures.
