The Ropers, Stanley and Helen, left “Three’s Company” to star in their own spin-off show called “The Ropers.”
Stanley and Helen Roper were the landlords of the main characters in “Three’s Company,” a sitcom that aired from 1977 to 1984. Portrayed by Norman Fell and Audra Lindley, the Ropers became popular characters with their own quirks and comedic interactions, particularly their marriage’s lack of romance, which was often played for laughs.
Due to their popularity, the characters were given a spin-off series titled “The Ropers,” which premiered in March 1979. The show focused on the couple after they sold their apartment building in “Three’s Company” and moved into a new community. The premise was based on the British sitcom “George and Mildred,” which was itself a spin-off of “Man About the House,” the show that “Three’s Company” was adapted from.
“The Ropers” series explored their lives as they tried to fit into a more upscale neighborhood and interacted with new characters, including their snobbish neighbor Jeffrey P. Brookes III, played by Jeffrey Tambor. Unfortunately, the spin-off did not achieve the same level of success as “Three’s Company” and was canceled after two seasons and 28 episodes. After the cancellation, there were discussions about the Ropers returning to “Three’s Company,” but this did not materialize, and the characters did not reappear on the original show. Norman Fell and Audra Lindley later reprised their roles for a guest appearance on the “Three’s Company” spin-off “Three’s a Crowd,” which followed Jack Tripper, one of the original show’s main characters, after the end of “Three’s Company.”
