The Divine Beasts were tamed by Link and the Champions, ultimately aiding in the defeat of Calamity Ganon.
In the context of “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” the Divine Beasts are ancient Sheikah machinery originally designed to protect the kingdom of Hyrule from the threat of Calamity Ganon. Each of these mechanical creatures was piloted by a Champion—a warrior chosen by Princess Zelda and the king of Hyrule from one of the four races: Gorons, Rito, Zora, and Gerudo.
When Calamity Ganon returned, the Champions attempted to use the Divine Beasts to stop him, but Ganon had anticipated this and turned the Beasts against Hyrule by corrupting them with his dark influence. The Champions were killed, and the Divine Beasts wreaked havoc under the control of Ganon’s phantom creations.
A century later, Link, the protagonist, awakens from a long slumber with no memory of these events. He is guided by the spirit of Princess Zelda to free the Divine Beasts from Ganon’s control. To do this, Link travels across Hyrule to each of the Divine Beasts, entering them and purging the corruption by defeating the Ganon phantoms inside. With the help of the spirits of the fallen Champions, Link is able to regain control of the Divine Beasts.
Once tamed, the Divine Beasts aim their powerful weapons at Hyrule Castle, where Calamity Ganon has taken residence. During the final battle, after Link has weakened Ganon, the Divine Beasts unleash a coordinated attack that significantly reduces Ganon’s power, allowing Link to defeat him and save Hyrule. The Divine Beasts then return to a dormant state, having fulfilled their purpose in protecting the land.
