Shauna left the show after the first season. She was written out without an on-screen explanation.
Shauna Dicanio, portrayed by Amanda Setton, was an office assistant at the OB/GYN practice where the main character, Mindy Lahiri, worked. She appeared in the first season of “The Mindy Project” as a somewhat sardonic and flirtatious character who often interacted with her coworkers. However, after the first season, the character was no longer part of the series.
The departure of Shauna from “The Mindy Project” was part of a creative decision to retool the show. The series creator and star, Mindy Kaling, and the showrunners decided to focus more on the workplace setting and Mindy’s professional and romantic life. As a result, several characters, including Shauna, were phased out to make room for new characters and storylines that better served the direction the show was heading in.
The show did not provide an in-universe explanation for Shauna’s exit, leaving her departure unaddressed within the storyline. This is not uncommon in television when shows are in their early stages and are still finding their footing. The series continued for six seasons, concluding in 2017, and introduced several new characters who became integral to the plot as it evolved.
