Edmunds died before the crew of the Endurance could reach him.
In the movie “Interstellar,” Dr. Mann explains that Edmunds, one of the twelve original Lazarus mission astronauts, had landed on a planet that was a potential candidate for human colonization. However, when the Endurance crew receives the data from the various Lazarus missions, they find that Edmunds’ transmissions had stopped. They initially believe this could be due to equipment failure.
Later in the film, after visiting Dr. Mann’s planet and experiencing his betrayal, the crew decides to head to Edmunds’ planet as it seems to be the most promising for colonization. Upon arrival, they discover that Edmunds had died. His death is presumed to have been caused by a rockslide, as evidenced by the grave Amelia Brand finds, marked by a simple pile of stones. Brand sets up a camp near Edmunds’ site, intending to carry on the mission to establish a human colony, using the embryos carried aboard the Endurance. The movie ends with the hope that Edmunds’ planet will become humanity’s new home, despite the tragedy of his death.
