A Night That Ended in Tragedy
Sheridan Gorman was an 18 year old freshman at Loyola University Chicago. In the early hours of March 19, 2026, she was walking with friends near Tobey Prinz Beach in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood when a gunman opened fire. Sheridan was killed at the scene. Investigators have said she was not believed to be the intended target.
A Suspect Was Arrested
Police later arrested Jose Medina, who has been charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and other offenses. Prosecutors say the suspect was hiding near a lighthouse before allegedly shooting at Sheridan and her friends. He has pleaded not guilty, and the criminal case is ongoing.
Her Mother’s Emotional Testimony
More than a year after Sheridan’s death, her mother, Jessica Gorman, testified before a House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on sanctuary city policies.
During her emotional remarks, she asked lawmakers why families like hers had to suffer such a loss and called for stronger cooperation between local authorities and federal immigration officials.
Remembering Sheridan
Family, friends, and the Loyola University community continue to remember Sheridan as a kind and bright young woman whose life was cut tragically short. Her death has remained in the national spotlight as both the criminal case and the broader political debate continue.
