A Different Version Was Almost Made
One of the biggest songs in Wicked almost sounded very different. During production, composer Stephen Schwartz suggested giving Glinda’s signature song, “Popular,” a more modern hip-hop rhythm.
It was an idea that could have completely changed one of the musical’s most recognizable moments.
Ariana Grande Said No
Ariana Grande, who plays Glinda in the film, immediately pushed back against the suggestion.
According to IMDb’s trivia section, Grande responded:
“Absolutely not, don’t do it. I want to be Glinda, not Ariana Grande playing Glinda.”
Her goal was to stay true to the character rather than bring her own pop music style into the performance.
Staying True to the Original

Grande has spoken in multiple interviews about how much Wicked has meant to her since she was young. She wanted her performance to reflect the stage musical that fans already loved while still making the character feel real on screen.
By rejecting the musical change, she helped keep “Popular” closer to the version audiences have known for years.
Fans Appreciated the Decision
Many fans praised the film for respecting the original Broadway musical while adapting it for the big screen. Songs like “Popular” remained instantly recognizable, which helped longtime Wicked fans connect with the movie.
The moment has become one of the more talked-about behind-the-scenes stories from the production because it shows how involved Grande was in protecting Glinda’s character.
A Small Decision That Could Have Changed Everything
If the idea had gone ahead, one of Wicked‘s most famous songs might have sounded completely different. Instead, Ariana Grande chose to keep the focus on Glinda herself, not on creating a new version that reflected her own music career.
For many fans, that decision helped preserve one of the musical’s most iconic moments.
