Rich Mullins tragically died in a car accident in 1997.
Rich Mullins was a renowned Christian music singer-songwriter best known for his worship songs “Awesome God” and “Sometimes by Step.” On September 19, 1997, Mullins was involved in a fatal accident on Interstate 39 near Peoria, Illinois. He was traveling with his friend, Mitch McVicker, to a benefit concert when their Jeep flipped over. Neither of them was wearing a seatbelt, and both were ejected from the vehicle. A passing semi-trailer truck, unable to avoid the accident scene, struck Mullins, leading to his death at the scene. McVicker survived but sustained serious injuries.
Mullins’ untimely death at the age of 41 was a significant loss to the Christian music community and his fans. His music continues to inspire and influence artists and listeners around the world. Following his death, the Rich Mullins Legacy Foundation was established to support music education for children, a cause close to Mullins’ heart. His life story has been captured in books, documentaries, and a feature film titled “Ragamuffin,” which highlights his musical career and spiritual journey.
