“A dog is a man’s best friend.” This is a statement often made to describe the type of genuine relationship that often exists between human beings and their canine friends. Dogs have been domesticated by man for centuries now, and different breeds of dogs have been used in different ways by man over the course of history, some being used as guard dogs, guide dogs, hunting dogs, herd dogs, etc. It is just about appropriate to say that dogs have deeply engrained themselves in the existence of man.

Despite how wonderful these amazing creatures are, evolution hasn’t been very fair to some of them, sadly with some of them having facial appearances that can otherwise be called hideous. Some dogs are just outrightly ugly, and although they deserve to be loved as much as other pretty dog breeds do, some of them have found themselves on the completely wrong side of evolution and are quite funny to look at. This list of the top 10 ugliest dog breeds will show you the dogs we feel evolution took the biggest piss on in terms of their appearance. The body structure and appearance of some of these dogs would definitely get a laugh out of you. These are the top 10 ugliest dogs.

1. Irish Wolfhound

Weighing up to 180 pounds, the Irish Wolfhound is one massive dog that may grow to heights of three feet at the shoulders. It resembles a Greyhound that shoved a fork in a light socket after downing 100 energy drinks. The body structure of the Irish Wolfhound allows it to imitate the galloping motions of a horse. They’re imposing and terrifying creatures you don’t want to run into in a dark alley.

Irish Wolfhounds are frequently played as the terrifying, frightening pets of medieval villains in films, making these enormous creatures the stuff of nightmares. In all honesty, the Irish Wolfhound is a patient and placid, gentle giant who gets along well with children.

2. English Bull Terrier

This dog’s shark-shaped or “egg-shaped” head is its most unappealing and most prominent characteristic. Looking at a Bull Terrier projects images of prizefighters who have had their noses broken one too many times — an image that adequately represents the breed’s history in dogfighting and bear-baiting. This dog breed has surprisingly found itself in the spotlight a number of times, despite its seemingly unappealing appearance.

Spuds McKenzie, an English Bull Terrier, was adopted as Bud Light’s mascot in a marketing campaign in the 1980s. This somewhat spurred people to look beyond the huge egg-shaped head, wide-set eyes, rough fur, and square body of the Spuds McKenzie commercials because they gained so much popularity.

3. Neapolitan Mastiff

This dog had gone as far as finding itself on the record books when a 125-pound Neapolitan Mastiff won the world’s ugliest dog competition in 2017. These dogs have a profoundly huge size and have wrinkled fur that can be likened to that of a 90-year-old man. This dog’s huge head, dripping lips, and sags of skin give them a sleepy and weird appearance. But, with that said, the craziness comes to an end.

The demeanor of this dog is usually calm, steady, and loyal; however, they have very bold personalities that adequately match their humongous sizes. Although Neapolitan mastiffs are typically docile, you’ll need to make sure they learn their manners early on since their size can be a liability if they aren’t properly trained.

4. The Chinese Crested

Although the Chinese Crested is a hairless dog breed, many of them have strange radical tufts of long, fluffy fur on their heads, ears, faces, feet, tails, and other weird places on their bodies. The dog’s physique is usually smooth and nearly human-like in appearance. Overall, the dog has a wacky wild appearance that can be likened to a cross between a crazy cat woman and an alien hybrid.

The Chinese Crested dog is the most prevalent breed to win ugly dog competitions around the country and is nothing short of deserving to be on this list. However, don’t be fooled by their unconventional appearance, these dogs are always a great addition to any home, and they won’t get in your way unless when they snuggle up to you and rest in your laps.

5. Borzoi

The Borzoi dog breed, sometimes known as the Russian Sighthound, has several characteristics which aren’t very appealing. They’re part of the Greyhound clan. Those related qualities should be visible if you look closely. However, the breed possesses a number of distinguishing characteristics. Borzoi dogs grow to be about 28 inches in height when they reach their full size.

They do not, however, have the same mass and bulk as other larger breeds of dogs; they usually appear thinner as a result. A coat of fine shaggy hair covers their extremely slim bodies. Their fur is virtually always ruffled and unkempt, no matter how good the attempt to keep it kempt is. Borzoi dogs have extremely lengthy faces, which are not desirable to look at; because of their long and thin snouts, they are sometimes compared to horses.

6. Whippet

Whippets who have a somewhat surreal appearance have severally been compared to jackal depictions from Ancient Egyptian art. Whippets have a characteristic small head and an extended snout that actually gives them the look of the jackal depictions. The head of the Whippet is usually disproportionately smaller in size when compared with the rest of its body. This gives it a unique profile that is difficult to ignore. The Whippet’s physique is relatively tiny and lanky.

Their physique sets them up as incredible fast-running dogs. Their powerful legs allow them to sprint at amazing speeds. In contrast, the rest of their body isn’t massive or bulky. As a result, they have a bony appearance that is found unappealing by many people. Their lanky physique does not make them the best cuddling buddy either. However, they try to make up for their excesses in terms of their athleticism.

7. Komondor

Komondor are Hungarian livestock protection dogs with a characteristic hairstyle that can be strongly likened to dreadlocks. These courageous best friends have a close relationship with their family, yet they can be reserved with outsiders. Because the Komondor enjoys being busy, make sure he or she has plenty of room to go around in.

The style of hair on Komondors hardly differentiates them from a mopstick as they are completely covered in a long mat of dreadlocks that covers every inch of their skin except their noses and mouths that are barely visible. One would definitely be hard-pressed to describe Komondors as ugly with their appearance.

8. Shar-pei

This dog breed really got the middle finger from evolution, with their unattractive wrinkly bodies and skin folds. While many dogs that have wrinkles and skin folds have them around their forehead, Shar-pei dogs have these wrinkles and skin folds all over their body and limbs. What’s worse?! Shar-pei dogs don’t have a particularly appealing demeanor, so they don’t really attract the attention of many people.

In the past, they were bred as fighting dogs, and their genes have retained their particularly aggressive and belligerent characteristics to this day. Despite its strange body form and unappealing facial appearance, Shar Pei owners really like this ugly dog breed.

9. Standard Schnauzer

The Standard Schnauzer isn’t a particularly ugly dog; in fact, its physical appearance is significantly better than some dogs that didn’t make this list. However, the Standard Schnauzer makes this list because of its mean demeanor. Its face looks like that of a mean uncle who doesn’t like having anyone around and is always grumpy.

It’s not that the Standard Schnauzer is a mean dog, but it just never looks happy, and when that is combined with the fact that the physical appearance isn’t exactly in the upper percentile of beautiful dogs, a head acutely shaped with a bearded appearance, everything just seems to work against this dog when it comes to being appealing to people.

10. The Mexican Hairless

The final entry on this list and probably the most unfortunate is this canine that is almost fully hairless. The Mexican Hairless Dog is thought to have its origins in pre-Hispanic Mexico and was probably the favorite pet dog of the Aztecs who resided there at the time. The Aztecs saw the true beauty that had often been ignored in this frequently neglected creature, and as a result, the Mexican Hairless Dog has been raised to have a royal, regal personality throughout many decades.

Despite their lack of hair, The Mexican Hairless Dog itself is not defined by its hairlessness and is an independent dog that is a devoted companion if taken in. They have a peculiar, hairless coat (which is usually black in color) and prominently pointed ears.

Dogs have many qualities, one of which is their cuteness. Humans seek out the company of dogs because of their affection, devotion, and camaraderie. These Top 10 Ugliest Dogs are more than just their looks, and they are bright, inquisitive, amusing, athletic, and resourceful. It’s merely a matter of fur whether you’re beautiful or not.

Despite the fact that they are not gorgeous dog breeds, these unattractive canines deserve a lot of love. Don’t let their strange appearance deter you! Many of these breeds are quite cuddly and affectionate! Their charisma more than compensates for their lack of physical appearance. Furthermore, the focus of attention is always on unsightly creatures, and everyone wants to observe their peculiar appearance up close and personal!
